You re good to go curiously this appears to be an inconsistent bug or problem in excel 2016.

Except keyboard of f7 and spell check button in toolbar you are also able to apply spelling check command from excel 2007 2010 2013 2016 2019 ribbon. If your sheet contains another error the spell check dialogue will again open immediately suggesting the correct spelling. If nothing is misspelled you should see a message that reads something like spell check complete.
To spell check one particular cell double click that cell to enter the edit mode and then initiate spell check. If you select some other cell excel will start spell checking from that cell onward till the end of the worksheet. Sounds like your spell checker file got corrupted.
